“On January 30, 1995, Thomas Bloom Raskin was born to ecstatic parents who saw him enter the world like a blue-eyed cherub, a little angel. Tommy grew up as a strikingly beautiful curly-haired madcap boy beaming with laughter and charm, making mischief, kicking the soccer ball in the goal, acting out scenes from To Kill A Mockingbird with his little sister in his father’s constitutional law class, teaching other children the names of all the Justices on the Supreme Court, hugging strangers on the street, teaching our dogs foreign languages, running up and down the aisle on airplanes giving people high fives, playing jazz piano like a blues great from Bourbon Street, and at 12 writing a detailed brief to his mother explaining why he should not have to do a Bar Mitzvah and citing Due Process liberty interests (appeal rejected). …

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I would like to thank our witnesses for being here today.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is our country’s most important anti-hunger program. SNAP reduces poverty and food insecurity and improves health and economic outcomes for over 42 million hungry Americans, especially children.
People receive an average of only $1.40 per meal through SNAP. In order to receive assistance, they must complete a detailed application process which includes providing documentation on income, identity, immigration status and address. Nearly 90 percent of participants are in households with children under the age of 18, or elderly persons 60 years or older, or an individual with disabilities. …

With passage of the historic Dodd-Frank legislation in 2010, Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as an independent Federal agency to protect American consumers in the financial marketplace. Since then, the CFPB has forced big banks, credit card companies, and others to return nearly $12 billion to the American people, with more than 29 million people winning some measure of fairness against the kinds of outrageous predatory schemes that led Congress to set up the CFPB in the first place. Millions of our people have been helped on a daily basis by the CFPB in dealing with Wells-Fargo and other mega-banks scamming the people. …
