TAKOMA PARK, M.D. — Congressman Jamie Raskin and Sarah Bloom Raskin today released the following statement about their son Thomas (Tommy) Bloom Raskin:
“On January 30, 1995, Thomas Bloom Raskin was born to ecstatic parents who saw him enter the world like a blue-eyed cherub, a little angel. Tommy grew up as a strikingly beautiful curly-haired madcap boy beaming with laughter and charm, making mischief, kicking the soccer ball in the goal, acting out scenes from To Kill A Mockingbird with his little sister in his father’s constitutional law class, teaching other children the names of all the Justices on the Supreme Court, hugging strangers on the street, teaching our dogs foreign languages, running up and down the aisle on airplanes giving people high fives, playing jazz piano like a blues great from Bourbon Street, and at 12 writing a detailed brief to his mother explaining why he should not have to do a Bar Mitzvah and citing Due Process liberty interests (appeal rejected). …

Statement of Congressman Jamie Raskin on The Killing of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani and the Dangers of War with Iran
January 4, 2020
“The United States of America is a constitutional democracy. We must be governed by the rule of law and formal governmental deliberation or we will be governed by chaos, impulse and whim. The reason the Founders gave Congress and not the president the exclusive power to declare war is because they rejected the practice of monarchs distracting their populations from domestic problems by plunging them into foolish and destructive wars of vanity and political calculation against other peoples who were themselves being misled by monarchs and tyrants of their own. …
Remarks Prepared for Delivery by Congressman Jamie Raskin
June 5, 2018
Principal Fernandez, Superintendent Smith, President Durso, Principal Sosik, Principal Tsonis, Principal Dimmick, Faculty and Staff, Coaches, Parents and Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts, Friends, Big Brothers and Little Sisters, Big Sisters and Little Brothers, and above all, the Einstein graduating Class of 2018.
Thank you for this honor.
I remember when I was in high school thinking how random it was that, out of billions of people on earth, I ended up going to school and graduating with this tiny and seemingly arbitrary group of people who I must confess had started to get on my nerves a little bit. It could have been anybody, but it was them and it was me. …

House Oversight Committee, Subcommittee on the Intergovernmental Affairs
Congressman Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member
May 9, 2018
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I would like to thank our witnesses for being here today.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is our country’s most important anti-hunger program. SNAP reduces poverty and food insecurity and improves health and economic outcomes for over 42 million hungry Americans, especially children.
People receive an average of only $1.40 per meal through SNAP. In order to receive assistance, they must complete a detailed application process which includes providing documentation on income, identity, immigration status and address. Nearly 90 percent of participants are in households with children under the age of 18, or elderly persons 60 years or older, or an individual with disabilities. …

Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) offered the following remarks (as prepared for delivery) today regarding the acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFBP):
With passage of the historic Dodd-Frank legislation in 2010, Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as an independent Federal agency to protect American consumers in the financial marketplace. Since then, the CFPB has forced big banks, credit card companies, and others to return nearly $12 billion to the American people, with more than 29 million people winning some measure of fairness against the kinds of outrageous predatory schemes that led Congress to set up the CFPB in the first place. Millions of our people have been helped on a daily basis by the CFPB in dealing with Wells-Fargo and other mega-banks scamming the people. …
